September 2025, Orange County, CA — WAVEs Gun Safety Working Action Group achieved a meaningful, community-focused win by helping spark a new model for local gun safety engagement. The group developed and advanced the idea for a city council member to formally request that the city’s police department host a public community outreach event centered on gun safety and safe firearm storage. That vision became reality in Irvine through close collaboration with Councilmember Melinda Liu, Orange County Board of Supervisor Katrina Foley, and the Irvine Police Department. The effort reinforced the importance of responsible firearm storage, strengthened community–police relationships, and demonstrated how coordinated local leadership can translate advocacy into real, on-the-ground impact.
